More young children than ever are pushing their physical and emotional limits in pursuit of athletic excellence, competing more fiercely and at younger ages. In their desire to be No. 1, they are undereating, overtraining, and using illegal supplements and steroids. Competition is not just proverbially tough; it is becoming an all-consuming endeavor, which prompts the question, "How much is too much for our youngsters"?

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, more than 3.5 million children under the age of 14 suffer sports-related injuries each year in the United States. Young athletes are particularly susceptible to injury for several reasons. Their coordination and motor skills are still developing and their bones have not finished growing and hardening.
